Joey Barton Says Finishing Second Will Be Huge For Liverpool And Hails Progress

Liverpool are heading in the right direction under Jurgen Klopp .

That’s the view of Joey Barton after the Reds moved into second in the Premier League with a comfortable victory over Newcastle.

Barton has been a big critic of Klopp in the past – once famously branding him a ‘giant German cheerleader’ on talkSPORT – but believes they are making big progress now and are edging ever closing to being title challengers.

Speaking on Matchday Live , he said: ” Liverpool are up to second in the table, they are pushing on now in the Champions League and it is looking like it could be a good season for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.

“Such has been Liverpool’s fall from grace – it has been over 28 years since they last won a title – to finish second is huge. It is a sign of progress.

“Are they getting nearer to winning the Premier League? Well, you would have to say yeah.

“They are still a number of points behind Manchester City but isn’t everybody this season? City have been exceptional.

“Do I see Liverpool winning the Premier League in the foreseeable future? Not with what they have got.

“Keita is going to come in and will give them legs. I still think they need a top-class goalkeeper. The centre-half pairing of Van Dijk alongside Matip or Lovren has become resolute.

“There is progress and they are certainly heading in the right direction.”
